What’s the Deal With Celery Juice?
Every year there‘s a new unsung hero fruit or veggie that is suddenly thrust upon the world stage and touted as a the miracle cure for everything. 2018 was obviously the year of the celery.
You probably heard about the celery juice craze that originated with Anthony William (a.k.a. the Medical Medium), who offers medical and health advice based on alleged communication with a spirit from the future. 🤦♀️
He claims that drinking a fresh 16 ounce glass of celery juice every morning on an empty stomach will “transform your health and digestion” in 1 week. 🤔
First, how scary is it that our society has stooped to taking health advice from a guy who claims to talk to ghosts? That’s right, the Medical Medium does not have a medical degree or any other kind of scientific background, but has over 2 million followers on Instagram, multiple best selling books, and a celebrity following.
Second, sources aside, I’m leery of anyone who touts a magic potion that’s a “cure-all” with zero science backing.
And third, we as a society have to stop seeking a magic pill!
There simply is NO single food or beverage (and never will be) that can resolve all your health issues and reverse the damage from living a sedentary, unhealthy lifestyle. I know we all wish that it were that easy, but the only way to regain and maintain health is to cultivate healthy behavior at least 80% of the time.
That being said, let’s get back to celery juice. Is drinking celery juice a bad thing? 💁♀️
Let’s assume that you want to invest in a masticating juicer, devote 15-30 minutes every morning to prepping and juicing celery, and can actually get it down (it’s an “acquired” taste 🤢), what are the actual, science-backed benefits?
Celery juice is:
✅ Hydrating and energizing (but so is water, especially at room temperature with a dash of Himalayan Salt and lemon 🍋)
✅High in beneficial minerals, vitamins, and micronutrients that have some cancer protective properties (but so are many other foods!)
✨Calcium+silicon help regenerate+strengthen damaged bones
✨Vit K protects against osteoporosis
✨Anti-inflammatory due to polyacetylene+luteolin
✨… But Cluster Salts??? 🤔🧐🙄🙈
Here’s what the Medical Medium has to say about these:
“The natural healthy sodium in celery juice clings to toxic, dangerous salts from poor-quality foods and helps bind onto and draw them out of the body while replacing them with special undiscovered cluster salts the body really needs.
These cluster salts bond together as one and are infused with celery’s other critical chemical compounds and information that’s highly active in healing the body. Science has not yet deconstructed or studied these cluster salts.”
For the record, the only thing that’s factual about the above statement is that science has not discovered cluster salts, because… [fill in the blank]! 🤦♀️
So what about me? 🤷♀️
Admittedly, I drink celery juice some mornings with a little ginger and lemon to tame the taste (despite the Medical Medium’s claims that it only works when drunk on its own… on an empty stomach… in the morning… between 7:45 -7:50 a.m.… Eastern Standard Time… when you’re facing East—ok… the last few were an exaggeration). It’s a great alternative to coffee on the days I‘m not fasting.
But what’s even a better alternative, which I drink daily after I break my fast, is a Green drink that is packed with vitamins and essential micronutrients from over 70 fruits and veggies PLUS probiotics, and is designed to support the four foundations of health; nutrition, circulation, digestion and immunity. vitamins and minerals from over 70 fruits and veggies PLUS probiotics, like my favorite elixir, Green Vibrance.
BOTTOM LINE on CELERY JUICE
If it fits into your life, drink it! But be realistic.
It’s not a cure-all, so don’t expect it to help you lose weight, heal your gut, or improve your health if your lifestyle does not support your health.
‼️PRO-TIP: Celery is on EWG’s dirty dozen list, so make sure you buy organic!
